Review - Kaiser Chiefs 20 years of Employment festival

Celebrating 20 years of Employment - Their debut Album, in the lovely surroundings of Temple Newsam Park in Leeds, The Chiefs were joined by a mix of up and coming and established acts for one of the best 1 day festivals of the year so far.

First up is Yorkshire girl Ellur, Who sounded very much like another up and comer, Lauran Hibberd, in musicality and stage presence. As is the case with many festival opener's its early revelers at the main stage and they were not disappointed by the 30 minute set on show.

With a tour coming up at the end of the year, Tickets are available from Ellur.biz

Hot Wax - all the way from Hastings and consisting of Lola, Tallulah and Drummer, Alfie are one of the modern punk acts making all the right noises -Rip It Out was a stand out track from the set, with a nod to bands like Wolf Alice in their sound, The warm weather didn't phase them and they roared through the allocated stage time.

The sound engineering was very good at the event and added even more polish to what was already an exciting and entertaining set. Wanna Be A Doll was the highlight, the bands album is out now and you can click the image below to buy it.

Lola Sam - Hot Wax

20 years ago We Are Scientists burst on to the Uk alternative scene, with a huge album called "With Love and Squalor", the New York outfit played the album in its entirety (A running theme for all the acts from here on in), known for their on stage Jokes the band made light of mixing up the running order to make sure the "beer and food stands didn't have bigger crowds"

"No Body Move, Nobody Gets Hurt" is the first big sing along song of the day.

Liverpool's The Coral walked through  almost a quarter of a century of music with Pass it On, Dreaming of You, In the Morning and a cover of People are Strange, definitely our favorite act of the day.

Onto The Cribs, maybe it was the heat but the band weren't at their best yesterday. They said they don't tour as much as they used to and lacked their usual panache, the set seemed a little rushed which might have been due to time constraints. it would be interesting to see them again next time however, with perhaps more time to play through.

A little musical fact, the Video to Razorlight song Before I fall to Pieces features former Neighbours star Guy Peirce, you can see him below, They are one of the best bands of the last 20 years, and, with the venue now almost at full capacity, were able to run through a set list of hit after hit, including In The Morning and ending on Crowd pleaser America. The band mentioned new music, lets hope that's on the radar very soon.

Then of course the headliners, The Kaiser chiefs always put on a show and starting with a mock Jurassic Park style introduction and stage backing looking like a closed down shop, Rickie, Peanut, Simon, Andrew and Vijay really enjoyed themselves.

Employment is an album that still sounds fantastic 20 years on and was played in full, in order. The hour and a half set also included Angry Mob, Ruby, Never Miss a beat and some other surprise tracks.

The Band were joined on stage by founder member Nick Hodgson for a second performance of I Predict A Riot during the encore, With the band playing in their Home city of Leeds and being big football fans were also joined by Leeds United Striker Patrick Bamford, as well as the championship football trophy. As non locals, this certainly ramped up the atmosphere for us as the local population in attendance enjoyed the moment.

Front man Ricky Wilson said he'd like to do it all again next year... watch this space!
