Interview - Cryptworm
I was very excited to have the opportunity to interview Tibor of Cryptworm in advance of their upcoming gig at Voodoo Daddy's on Tuesday 20th October with Ceremonial Bloodbath, thanks to Phage Records and Dead Wax Norwich.
More interviews to follow soon.
Here's the interview to get you ready for this fantastic show.
Great to have you guys coming to Norwich, is it your first time here?
This will be the very first time for the band to play in Norwich so we are excited about the show. It's always a great excitement to play at new places.
Bristol has a great music scene, have you felt it has changed much over the last 12 years?
It certainly has a great scene, you can find everything from small underground shows to huge mainstream events and the venues are usually packed even during the weekday. It also has now a dedicated metal records shop in the heart of Bristol called Black City Records.
Black City Records is a great store.
What would you say your biggest influences are?
I'd say our biggest influences musically are Carcass, Mortician and Demilich. Lyrically our biggest influence is an online medical book about different diseases.
I love that.
What inspires you guys?
To write music which is equally disgusting, catchy and fun to play live. On our recent tour someone mentioned that we invented a new genre called "death funk" which I found quite amusing. But this is a double edged sword because there are people who love these worm ridden grooves, but on the other hand there are some death metal fans who hate these bouncy riffs.
I definitely love a bouncy riff so I will say I am a fan of "death funk".
If you could give your band starting out in 2014 some advice what would it be?
Maybe to not to sit on the demo until 2017. We had at least 8 songs fully written by the end of 2015 but we kept rewriting them and at the end only recorded 3 for the debut demo years later.
One moment from a tour that made you "what the hell"?
It's maybe hard to believe but I didn't have any negative experience during our last tour. However I had a very positive "what the hell" moment at PartySan Herbsoffensive. I didn't do any research and I genuinely thought it's going to be a 2 day club fest and not a massive outdoor festival so I was quite shocked when I've seen the size of the stage. It was our biggest stage to play on so far and it was super cool.
The moment you're most proud of?
I'd say when we signed to Me Saco Un Ojo Records. I've been a fan of the label long before I moved to the UK and formed Cryptworm so I was super shocked when they contacted us shortly after our demo got released. The other is when we started working with Kill-Town Bookings. I was attending to their fest in Copenhagen and their tours which came to Bristol years before they became aware of us.
What's coming up for you in 2027?
It's quite packed up for us already. We start next year with Time to Die Fest in London which is an exclusive MSUO event. Then we'll have a Kill-Town Booking European tour with Outre-Tombe in May. We'll also have a shorter release coming up hopefully in the first half of the year. It's already been recorded, right now we are just waiting for the artwork to be finished.
Thank you so much, I have really enjoyed speaking with you, cannot wait for the show.
