Thank you so much for doing this interview.
Great to speak to you again.
So you founded Kaine 16 years ago.
What inspired you to begin your band?
In 2009 the UK scene was dominated by the Emo and Screamo type genres, everything from Metalcore to Deathcore, and basically anything that was being played to death on Kerrang or Scuzz. There was nothing out there, that was just straight up Heavy Metal, it was all tied to that trend at the time. If you weren’t into the trend then, you didn’t have much to go out and see, so I figured why not start my own band doing the sort of music I liked?
How have you seen the music industry change over that time?
The scene now is lightyears ahead of where it was in 2009, basically back then it was a few bands dragging their school friends to gigs, with very little interest in developing beyond that. Fortunately, new bands came along and started knocking that whole mentality out of the water, bands that are still around today doing similar things, bands like Osmium Guillotine, Fury, Secreum, Dismanibus, Seven Sisters, Toledo Steel and more, all sort of came about the same time and changed the narrative a bit.
What's been your favourite gig?
I have had so many, the Kaine 10-year show at Colchester Arts Centre probably tips it.
You've been very famous lately unknowingly being in the top 10, what other dizzying heights do you think you might have missed?
It’s bizarre to us that it even happened, the reality it hasn’t changed our prospects very much ha! In fact, some have used it as a point of derision. But I'd say to break the top 100, as a band with no label, no managed, and absolutely no buzz, push or industry support is a huge achievement. Some have expected the labels, management and festivals to come knocking as a result, but I can assure you they have not!
Any other aspirations?
Our immediate objective is to get our re-imagining of the After Extinction/Extinction After album, Extinctions End, out at last.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
I’d say firstly, do it because you enjoy it because unless you're in the top 1% you are unlikely ever to make any money in music. If you find success, then that will be all the better. Don’t get involved with petty band feuds or wars, don’t step on other bands to get slots or a push, and treat the venues you play with respect, turn up on time, sober, and clean and don’t disrespect your audience when you play by giving them a poor show because you’d rather get pissed than play properly, it might seem alright in your mind, we on the floor can see and hear otherwise, and don’t forget to tune!
Can I make assumption the horror genre is important to you? Hellraiser is my all-time favourite. What's your take on horror?
Toby is the guy who watches horror in this band, I am not really a TV or film guy at all, I am more into sports ha!
Sports hey, afraid not something I know much about, you'll have to give me some pointers.
What's next for you guys?
Finishing the new record, playing a couple of more gigs this year and going from there. We don’t have a big plan at this stage, we have a lot written for a few more records, but we’ll see how we go. I have not been well, Liam has not been well either, so we have had to take things slower.
Make sure you all look after yourselves. I'm certain there are great things ahead for you.
