We were lucky enough to catch up and coming Norwich band, Crying in Colour, at their support slot last week at the Waterfront studio.
No strangers to the local gig scene - and with a fantastic cover of Avril Lavigne as part of their set, it was good to sit down with the band and have a chat about slippers, all things music, and what might be coming next!

Lets start with the amazing Sponge Bob themed slippers, Gary the Snail! Will we see more themed footwear in the future?
Firstly, Gary is honored to get a mention, and he will make a return! Making his debut at the
Waterfront, he got pretty comfy up there. So we’ll stay loyal to him for the time being, but
definitely keep tabs on Luke’s style choices, he might change it up at some point! Or just decide that playing drums in slippers is not the way to go - let’s see.
It most certainly is!
You mentioned you were heading into the studio, what’s the recording process like for you as a band?
So for our previous releases, we recorded all our parts in the Studio (shoutout to Owen from
Sickroom who does amazing audio things). Generally, starting with drums and bass, building
tons of guitar layers and then onto vocals/harmonies. For our EP which is currently in the works, we went about it a bit differently. Vocals and Guitars were recorded at Pirate studios, then drums and bass at Sickroom, so we did it sort of in reverse. Kaileb Cargill from Cargill Audio is mixing and mastering this one, so we can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Does this mean an Album is in the works?
Yes, and we’re so excited for our four-track EP to drop. It’s still cooking but we’ll be releasing
our feature single in early May, and it’s called ‘Stay With Me’. It’s basically a break-up anthem,
but with the full EP, expect various themes and styles which pay homage our fusion of
inspirations, largely in keeping with the alternative/rock genre.
The name “Crying in Colour” is really interesting, where did it come from?
The story behind the name is less interesting, unfortunately! It was a classic case of spit balling in the Whatsapp group chat, and this one seemed to stick. We liked the alliteration of the name, and only after it caught us did we think about what it could represent, associating colors with different feelings and experiences brought to life in our songs.
How has your guitarist never been to The Waterfront until your gig with Thanks for The Memories? It’s Norwich’s Iconic venue!
I KNOW, it is shameful, really! Marcus has yet to fully immerse himself in the live music scene in Norwich (aside from playing in it), and he seems to frequent the same select venues when he spends time in the city, one of them being the Queen of Iceni which, as we know, has a direct view of the Waterfront!
We do think it’s quite iconic that his first visit there involved getting on stage, though. Definitely a cool story.
At least he can say he’s played in the same building as Nirvana and The Killers now!
Who’d be your favourite band to share a stage with?
‘Vower’, and Cara would fangirl big time over ‘Paramore’. So it would be hard to make us happy
but any of the above would be excellent.
All fine choices! what a gig it would be!
I really enjoyed your cover of Avril Lavigne, and also your own songs which were all very
powerful and work well live, would you say you have a favourite song to play?
Thanks, we brought that one out to celebrate the Emo/punk theme of the night! In terms of our own songs, we collectively agree on our unreleased single, ‘Stay With Me’, as our favorite to play live. It’s high-energy, vibey and Marcus gets to scream! And definitely the most pop-punk we get!
Finally, you’ve been on the BBC Introducing playlist now, always good for up and
coming bands, where would you like to go from here? Have you got any other live dates we can catch you on or festivals coming up, is there any Merch we can buy?
Yeah, we were thrilled to get Track of the Week for BBC Introducing in Norfolk and Suffolk for our latest release, ‘Something on the Loose’. That was a big one for us! As far as live shows go, we have a few summer dates, the first one’s being Punk’s Dead in Colchester on 23 rd May, and supporting Ratchet Dolls at the Banham Barrel on 30 th May. But we do also have a pretty big one coming up at Voodoo Daddy’s in Norwich soon, we just can’t say anything about it yet –
Keep tabs on our instagram: cryingincolour. With merch, we’re busy updating it in line with our next single, so again, spy on us to get info on when that will be available to buy.
Thanks so much all! we'll be keeping our eyes on the Voodoo's show and hopefully can buy Crying in Colour Slippers from a merch stand soon!
